Anthropogenic global warming (AGW) deniers went crazy a few months ago with an email controversy involving the University of East Anglia in Britain. Joining an earlier finding by the House of Commons, a British panel has just issued a sweeping exoneration of all scientists involved. Climatologist Phil Jones was immediately reinstated in his position at the research unit (he had “stepped aside” during the investigation proceedings). Check out the New York Times for more info.
AGW deniers will likely spin this any number of different ways, probably including something along the lines of “the entire British government is simply in on this vast, global conspiracy of man-made global warming!” Why? Because the hysteria over AGW denialism is not based on science and facts – it is based on preconceived world views , propaganda and self-interests.
The truth has always been, and remains, that the overwhelming majority of climate scientists agree AGW is real and likely one of the greatest threats mankind has ever faced. There is a vast amount of scientific research and study from many different fields of science that confirm AGW, and no evidence coming out of the scientific community that anything else could account for the changes we are seeing in our climate.
This war against science is led by large fossil-fuel corporations and their sponsored think-tanks who want to defer their accountability and responsibilities for as long as possible. In light of the BP Gulf spill the time has finally come when all people on this planet, even staunch, right-wing Americans, need to join in solidarity and move our country and our planet away from a fossil-fuel reliant economy and forward into an energy future based on renewable energy and social justice.

“This war against science is led by large fossil-fuel corporations and their sponsored think-tanks who want to defer their accountability and responsibilities for as long as possible…….”
“…….preconceived world views…….”
Sounds to me like you are right there with the crowd
AGW Deniers can see that the world is warming up, not all of them are stupid, I include myself in this category.
As a scientist all I can tell you that I, along with many other scientists would dearly like to …
a) see all evidence and documentation from so called AGW experts not just their results
b) see the specifications and designs of all equipment used to take AGW measurements
c) See “all” the data from those measurements
d) Learn which methods were used to arrive at their conclusions including the mathematics
e) Find out why volcanologists are not invited to any AGW meetings
f) Find out why many publications, including Time Magazine and other do not give equal consideration to equally qualified scientists who wish to refute evidence on AGW they find to be questionable.
Do you think there is anything wrong with any of the above?
Donald:
“As a scientist” – what kind of scientist are you please? What are your degrees and where do you work? Also, whom do you mean when you say “many other scientists?”
There is also a big difference between “denier” and “skeptic.” Deniers are far more prevalent and loud these days. I do not want to lump you in wit them if that’s not what you are.
a) This is obviously a reference to FOIA requests made lately – I assume you are referring to the media coverage regarding this lately that has been widely spread by Fox News? There are thousands of different studies relating to global warming in numerous different fields. The peer-review process depends on other scientists being able to duplicate the work – so the details of these works is available.
b) I believe this is available (but of course varies) for any of the scientific publications on the subject.
c) Again, this is available.
d) Again, as far as I’ve ever seen, this is available. Perhaps you should refer to specific studies where this is not available?
e) I don’t know where you get this information or what the point of it is, but I would point out that volcanologists have nothing to do with AGW – volcanoes are not caused by human activity, and the ghg contribution of volcanoes is well documented and understood.
f) Time Magazine is not a peer-reviewed journal. It has no more scientific legitimacy than the WSJ or Cosmopolitan for that matter. It is entirely dependent on who the articles are written by or/if they are reprints from somewhere else. If there are scientists who wish to refute evidence on AGW then they have the opportunity to perform research or experiments and publish their findings for review in peer-reviewed literature, just like everyone else. Most of these “scientists” you mention are likely only attempting to cast doubt on solid science without any hard evidence to support their positions. Please provide specifics if you have them.
Nothing wrong with any of the above – but I think there are many misconceptions about what you have listed.
